What Is Red Wine?
Red wine is made from dark-coloured grape varieties. During the winemaking process, the grape skins remain in contact with the juice, giving the wine its characteristic colour, tannins, and flavour. Red wines range from light-bodied and fruity to full-bodied and robust, with flavours influenced by grape variety, climate, and winemaking techniques.
How Red Wine Is Made: A Step-by-Step Guide
- Harvesting: Grapes are picked at optimal ripeness to develop the wine’s flavours.
- Crushing and Fermentation: The grapes are crushed to release their juice, and the skins remain in contact with the juice during fermentation, where yeast converts the sugars into alcohol.
- Pressing: After fermentation, the wine is pressed to separate the juice from the skins, which impart tannins and colour.
- Aging: The wine may be aged in stainless steel tanks, oak barrels, or concrete vessels to develop its flavours. Oak barrels add notes of vanilla, spice, and toast.
- Bottling: Once the wine has reached its peak flavour, it is filtered and bottled, ready for enjoyment.
Types of Red Wine at Barrel & Batch
- Cabernet Sauvignon: Known for its full-bodied structure, high tannins, and dark fruit flavours, often with notes of blackcurrant, cedar, and tobacco.
- Merlot: A softer, medium-bodied red with flavours of plums, cherries, and hints of chocolate. It’s approachable for both seasoned wine drinkers and newcomers.
- Shiraz: An iconic Australian red, bold and spicy with rich flavours like blackberry and pepper.
- Pinot Noir: Light to medium-bodied, offering red fruit flavours like cherries and raspberries with earthy and floral notes.
- Grenache: Known for its juicy red fruit flavours and spice, Grenache can be light and fruity or rich and full-bodied.
- Malbec: A popular choice from Argentina, offering rich dark fruit flavours like plum and blackberry.
- Nebbiolo: An Italian classic with high tannins and acidity, showcasing flavours of cherry and earthy truffle notes.
Red Wine vs. White Wine: Key Differences
Red wine and white wine are produced using different winemaking techniques, leading to distinct characteristics:
Colour and Tannins
Red wine gets its colour from the grape skins, which are left in contact with the juice during fermentation. The skins also provide tannins, which give red wine its structure and age-worthiness. White wine is typically made without skin contact, resulting in a lighter colour and a different flavour profile.
Body and Flavour Profile
Red wines generally have a fuller body, with flavours ranging from dark fruit to earthy, spicy notes. White wines tend to be lighter and more refreshing, with flavours that are often fruitier and floral.

Seasonal Red Wine Recommendations
Red wines can be enjoyed year-round, but certain styles pair well with specific seasons:
- Summer: Lighter reds like Pinot Noir and Grenache are perfect for warm weather.
- Autumn: Medium-bodied reds like Merlot and Sangiovese complement hearty stews.
- Winter: Full-bodied reds like Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Malbec are great for colder months.
- Spring: Bright acidity and fruit in reds like young Syrah or Zinfandel pair nicely with fresh produce.
Food Pairings for Red Wine
Red wine pairs well with various dishes. Here are some pairing suggestions:
- Grilled Meats: Full-bodied reds pair well with grilled steaks and lamb.
- Pasta with Tomato-Based Sauces: Medium-bodied reds complement rich pasta dishes.
- Cheese Platters: Hard cheeses pair well with bold reds, while lighter reds complement soft cheeses.
- Roasted Vegetables: Earthy flavours in roasted dishes match well with Grenache and Malbec.
Aging Potential of Red Wine
Many red wines improve with age, developing deeper flavours over time. Wines like Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz often have excellent aging potential.
Store them in a cool, dark place at consistent temperatures between 12-15°C for best results.
Sustainability in Red Wine Production
Many of the red wines we offer at Barrel & Batch come from vineyards that focus on sustainable practices. Supporting sustainable wines promotes healthier soils and better quality grapes.
How to Choose the Perfect Red Wine for You
When selecting a red wine, consider your taste preferences and occasion:
- For a Full-Bodied Red: Look for Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, or Malbec.
- For a Lighter Option: Choose a Pinot Noir or Grenache.
- For Aging: Opt for wines with high tannins for long-term storage potential.
- For Casual Sipping: A Merlot or Sangiovese is perfect for everyday enjoyment.
