What Is Champagne?
Champagne is a sparkling wine produced exclusively in the Champagne region of France. It’s made using the méthode traditionnelle, a process involving secondary fermentation in the bottle to create its iconic bubbles. The primary grape varieties used are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, with each contributing to Champagne’s distinct character. Known for its vibrant acidity and flavours of citrus, apple, and brioche, Champagne is a symbol of luxury and celebration, often reserved for the finest occasions.
What Is Sparkling Wine?
Sparkling wine refers to any wine with significant levels of carbonation produced outside of the Champagne region. There are various types of sparkling wines made around the world, including Prosecco from Italy, Cava from Spain, and Australia’s own sparkling varieties. Sparkling wines vary in flavour, sweetness, and production methods, offering something for every palate. Whether fruity and light like Prosecco or more complex and rich, sparkling wines are a versatile choice for any occasion.
How Champagne & Sparkling Wine Are Made: A Step-by-Step Guide
Champagne Process
The Champagne production process follows the méthode traditionnelle and includes additional steps:
- Harvesting: Grapes are hand-picked to ensure only the best fruit makes it into the Champagne.
- Pressing: The grapes are gently pressed to extract juice, which then undergoes primary fermentation in tanks.
- Blending: Different base wines are blended to create a consistent style.
- Second Fermentation: The blended wine is bottled with added yeast and sugar, initiating secondary fermentation and creating bubbles.
- Aging: The wine is aged on its lees (dead yeast cells) for a minimum of 15 months, adding depth and complexity.
- Disgorgement: The lees are removed, and dosage is added to balance sweetness.
Sparkling Wine Process
Sparkling wine production varies slightly depending on the method used, but the Charmat and méthode traditionnelle are the most common:
- Primary Fermentation: Juice is fermented in tanks.
- Second Fermentation: In the Charmat method, this occurs in large pressurised tanks, while in the méthode traditionnelle, it happens in the bottle.
- Aging: Sparkling wines may or may not age on the lees, depending on the style.
- Bottling: After secondary fermentation, the wine is bottled, sealed, and ready to enjoy.
We source Champagne and sparkling wines made using both methods, ensuring a diverse and exciting selection for our customers.
Different Types of Champagne & Sparkling Wine
Champagne Types
Champagne styles vary by sweetness level and grape composition:
- Brut: Dry and crisp, Brut is the most popular Champagne style.
- Blanc de Blancs: Made from 100% Chardonnay, offering elegant citrus and floral notes.
- Blanc de Noirs: Made from Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, providing a fuller body with red fruit notes.
- Rosé: A blend of red and white wines, Rosé Champagne adds vibrant fruitiness to the mix.
Sparkling Wine Types
Sparkling wines can differ significantly in style:
- Prosecco: Light, fruity, and slightly sweeter, Prosecco is Italy’s most popular sparkling wine.
- Cava: Spain’s take on sparkling wine, Cava is often more affordable but still made in the méthode traditionnelle.
- Australian Sparkling: Known for crisp acidity and vibrant fruit flavours, Australia’s sparkling wines are world-class.
Regions of Production
Champagne and sparkling wine production extends far beyond France, with many other regions around the world producing high-quality offerings. Some notable regions include:
- Champagne, France: The only place that can legally produce Champagne, known for its limestone-rich soils.
- Prosecco, Italy: Prosecco is produced in the Veneto region, offering a light and refreshing profile.
- Cava, Spain: Produced primarily in the Penedès region, Cava is made using the same traditional method as Champagne.
- Australia: Tasmania and Victoria are the top regions for Australian sparkling wines, known for their crisp acidity and clean fruit flavours.
Innovations in Champagne & Sparkling Wine Production
Champagne and sparkling wine producers are continually evolving with new techniques:
- Sustainable Viticulture: A focus on organic and biodynamic farming to ensure environmental sustainability.
- Lower Dosage: Producers are using lower sugar levels in dosage to create drier, more terroir-expressive wines.
- Extended Aging: Some sparkling wines are aged longer on their lees to add complexity and richness.
At Barrel & Batch, we celebrate these innovations by offering a selection of traditional and modern sparkling wines.
