Prunotto's Vigna Colonnello is one of the great single-vineyard Baroli of the Bussia cru, drawn from an east-facing parcel high on the slopes of Monforte d'Alba. The estate, founded in 1904 and now part of the Antinori family, has earned a reputation for combining traditional Piemontese craft with quietly modern precision, and the Colonnello is the most coveted bottling in the range.
The wine is made only in the strongest years and aged for an extended period in Slavonian oak, followed by a long settling in bottle before release as a Riserva. The aim is a Nebbiolo that retains the rose-petal lift and red-fruited grace of the Bussia hillside while gaining the savoury depth and complexity that only patient élevage can deliver.
Garnet red in the glass, the wine opens with aromas of black cherry, ripe plum, dried rose, balsamic herbs and wild flowers, lifting to subtle tar and tea leaf with air. The palate is elegant and refined, with mouthfilling polished tannins, fine acid drive and a long, perfumed finish that echoes the aromatics.
