Roagna is a historic Piemonte estate based in Barbaresco since the early 1900s, now run by fifth-generation Luca Roagna. The family has long produced deeply traditional, age-worthy wines, with the heart of the estate its holdings in the Pajè cru in Barbaresco. In 1989 they acquired La Rocche e La Pira in Castiglione Falletto, now the cornerstone of Roagna's Barolo production, and Luca has since acquired the neighbouring land to give the family a near-monopole of the Pira hill.
The 2019 Barolo Pira comes from a steep, hillside site with calcareous clay soils rich in white rock and sand, home to the estate's new winery. The vines are over 25 years old, propagated via massal selection from old vine wood. The result is a powerful, structured Barolo of considerable depth and ageing potential.
Fermentation takes place in large casks with extended macerations of 60-90 days. Ageing continues for several years in traditional Slavonian oak botti, and the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered in the estate's longstanding traditional style.
