Margheria is one of the great crus of Serralunga d'Alba, and Massolino has been bottling it on its own since 1985. The vineyard sits on calcareous soils carrying a slightly higher proportion of sand than the neighbouring subzones, and that lighter soil profile shows up in the glass as perfume and finesse rather than sheer muscle.
The fruit is entirely Nebbiolo, fermented on skins and then matured in large Slavonian oak casks in the traditional Serralunga manner before further time in bottle. Massolino has been working these vineyards since 1896, and the house style has always favoured patience over intervention.
The bouquet leads with violets and red cherry, then opens into spice, tobacco and underbrush. The palate is harmonious and beautifully balanced, with bright acidity, firm but finely integrated tannins and a long, savoury close. Approachable with a decant, though this is a wine built for the long haul. Serve it with truffle pasta, braised beef or aged Castelmagno.
