Vignarionda is the great cru of Serralunga d'Alba, a site with such an obvious vocation for Nebbiolo that it is spoken of in the same breath as the most famous names in Barolo. Pira Luigi farm a parcel here and treat it as the summit of the range, bottling it only as a single vineyard wine.
Serralunga gives Barolo its most structured, most long lived expression, and Vignarionda concentrates that character. The nose is layered and slow to open, with dark cherry, dried rose, liquorice, tobacco leaf and a distinct mineral, almost iron like note. The palate is deep and firmly framed, with powerful but polished tannins and a finish that goes on and on.
The Pira family established the estate in the early 1950s and farm twelve hectares in the commune, having spent years selling their fruit before deciding to age and bottle under their own name. Total production remains small. This is a wine for the cellar; if you open one early, decant it well ahead and serve with rich, slow cooked meat.
