Elio Grasso is one of the benchmark estates of Monforte d'Alba, farming a beautiful natural amphitheatre of vineyards in the Langhe. Casa Maté sits within the famous Ginestra cru, on clay soils at a lower altitude than the estate's Gavarini holding, giving a Barolo that is richer and more generous in style.
Made from Nebbiolo and aged at length in large untoasted oak casks in the traditional manner, it is a powerful, structured wine. Expect aromas of dark cherry and ripe strawberry, dried rose and violet, with menthol, liquorice, leather and balsamic spice. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with firm, fine tannins and a long, savoury finish.
A classic, age-worthy Barolo, it rewards cellaring and pairs beautifully with braised beef, game, truffle dishes and aged hard cheeses.
