Pira Barolo Marenca DOCG 2022 750ml
Marenca is the powerhouse of the Pira Luigi range. Two hectares in Serralunga d'Alba on calcareous clay with a western exposure, replanted in 1990, giving fruit that carries the tannic richness Serralunga is famous for.
Where the neighbouring crus lean towards perfume, Marenca leans towards depth. The nose is dense and brooding at first, with black cherry, plum, liquorice, dark chocolate and dried herbs, opening slowly into leather and tobacco. The palate is broad and firmly structured, tannins substantial and finely worked, with a long, warming finish that holds its shape.
The three Serralunga crus sit close to one another, yet microclimate and soil make each of them unmistakably distinct. This one asks for time in the cellar and, when the day comes, for a proper decant alongside braised or roasted red meat, game or a rich mushroom dish.
