Brezza is one of the oldest family names in the village of Barolo, with vineyards owned since 1885 and estate bottling dating back to around 1910. Now certified organic, the family works its hillside sites by hand and ages its Nebbiolo in large, untoasted Slavonian oak casks so that fruit and place, rather than oak, define each wine.
This Barolo is drawn from vineyards across Barolo, Monforte d'Alba and Novello in the south-western part of the zone, planted on a mix of clay, silt and sandy soils at around 300 metres. After a comparatively short maceration, the wine spends two years in large, seasoned oak casks followed by a year in bottle before release.
It shows a classic Barolo profile of red berries, sour cherry and dried rose petal, with notes of liquorice, orange peel, undergrowth and gentle spice. The palate is supple and finely structured, with lifted acidity and savoury tannins that carry the fruit through a long finish.
A natural match for Piedmontese fare such as braised meats, slow-cooked tripe, roast pork or aged local cheeses.
