Brezza's winery sits within the famed Cannubi hill in the village of Barolo, where the family has owned vines since 1885. The certified organic estate works by hand, ferments with minimal intervention and ages its Barolo in large Slavonian oak casks, a traditional approach that puts site character first.
Cannubi is one of Barolo's most celebrated crus. Brezza's south-east facing parcel lies at around 250 metres where the Sant'Agata Fossili marls meet the sandier Diano sandstone, giving silty, sandy soils that produce perfumed, finely boned Nebbiolo. Hand-sorted grapes are fermented at controlled temperatures, then the wine rests for at least two years in large oak casks and a further year in bottle before release, with each bottle individually numbered.
Aromas of rose, red berries, anise and leather are joined by forest floor and a hint of mint. On the palate, red cherry, pomegranate, liquorice and tobacco flow over fine-grained tannins and bright acidity, finishing long and saline. Elegant now, it has the structure to age gracefully for many years.
Pair with braised hare, veal cheek with fresh herbs, slow-cooked game or aged Fontina.
Vintages may vary. Email us at hello@barrelandbatch.com.au if you would like confirmation.
