Ca' del Baio is the Grasso family's estate in Treiso, in the Barbaresco zone, where several generations have tended vineyards across some of the appellation's most respected crus. The family's approach is rooted in careful vineyard work and patient, traditional winemaking.
The Vallegrande Riserva Viti Vecchie is drawn from the oldest Nebbiolo vines surrounding the winery in the Vallegrande cru, planted between the 1960s and 2000 on grey calcareous and sandy marl with a westerly exposure. Fermentation is followed by a long submerged-cap maceration of around 60 days, after which the wine matures for 30 months in large oak casks and a further year in bottle before release.
Garnet in colour, it offers a bouquet of blood orange, violets, blackberries, rhubarb and incense. The palate is dry and velvety, with ripe fruit, delicate spice and well-integrated tannins giving it both elegance and considerable structure. Already soft and approachable a few years after harvest, it has the depth to keep developing for 10 to 15 years.
Serve with braised beef in red wine, roast game, truffle dishes or mature hard cheeses.
