Luigi Baudana is a tiny Serralunga d'Alba estate of just four hectares, sitting in some of the most prestigious crus of the village. The Vaira family of G.D. Vajra took over management in 2009, retaining Luigi's vineyards and continuing to bottle the wines separately under his name with the same painstaking attention they apply to their own labels.
Baudana is the cru that bears the family name, a steep, southwest-facing site at the heart of Serralunga's classic limestone-and-marl complex. It produces some of the most structured and ageworthy Barolos in the commune, marked by a tight, mineral spine that demands time in the cellar.
The 2015 Baudana is firm and tightly knit, with pure cherry and plum fruit threaded through spice, graphite, eucalyptus and licorice. After more than two and a half years in large Slavonian casks the wine has begun to develop secondary notes of dried leaves and earth, but the noble tannic frame and bright acidity point to many more years of patient cellaring.
