From Henschke, the Eden Valley estate that has been making wine in South Australia since 1868. Fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke runs the winery alongside his viticulturist wife Prue, with their three Eden Valley vineyards and one Adelaide Hills vineyard farmed in line with biodynamic principles. Henschke's flagship single-vineyard Shiraz wines, Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone, are among the most celebrated in Australia.
The Wheelwright Shiraz comes from a small Shiraz vineyard planted by Cyril Henschke in 1968, in the cooler central part of the Eden Valley, to mark the winery's centenary. The wine was first released in 2018 to commemorate 150 years of family winemaking. As a cool-climate expression of Shiraz, it is lifted and detailed, with red and dark cherry, white and black pepper, violets and savoury spice over a sleek, finely structured palate.
Fruit is hand-picked from low-yielding vines and fermented in traditional open-top fermenters before being matured in a mix of French and American oak hogsheads. Bottle ageing in the Henschke cellar follows before release.
