Domaine du Tunnel is run by Stéphane Robert and his wife Sandrine, who take their name from the cellar they work in: a former steam-train tunnel in Saint-Péray, in France's northern Rhône. From modest beginnings the domaine has grown to around 10 hectares across Cornas, Saint-Péray and Saint-Joseph.
The Cornas is pure Syrah, blended from many small parcels spread across the appellation's steep granite hillsides and aged in older oak barrels. It is dark and dense, with blackberry, cassis and blueberry fruit, violets, graphite, leather and hints of garrigue herbs, all framed by silky yet firm tannins.
Give it time in a decanter and serve with game, braised beef or rich, washed-rind cheeses. It will also reward several years in the cellar.
Vintages may vary. Email us at hello@barrelandbatch.com.au if you would like confirmation.
