Yves Cuilleron's 'Bassenon' is a Côte-Rôtie from the southern end of the appellation, drawn from gneiss-dominated vineyards on the Côte Blonde in the Semon sector. It is a traditional Syrah–Viognier co-ferment — 90% Syrah with 10% Viognier — that marries structure and mineral depth with the lifted floral perfume unique to this corner of the northern Rhône.
Richer and more structured than Cuilleron's 'Madinière' cuvée, the 2022 shows ripe black fruits — blackberry and black cherry — alongside violet, white pepper, Russian leather, black truffle, tapenade and blond tobacco. Each variety was vinified separately before blending, then aged 18 months in oak to build depth without masking the wine's cool, stony minerality.
A serious, ageworthy Côte-Rôtie from one of the northern Rhône's most consistent producers.
