From Domaine Yves Cuilleron, a benchmark producer of the Northern Rhône based in Chavanay, founded by his grandfather in 1920 and run by Yves since 1987. The Madinière cuvée comes from a south to south-east-facing site in the northern part of the Côte-Rôtie appellation, planted at a density of 8,000 to 10,000 vines per hectare.
A blend of 95 to 97% Syrah co-planted with around 3 to 5% Viognier (the maximum allowed in the appellation is 20%), in line with traditional Côte-Rôtie practice. Expect a cool-climate Syrah at its finest, with rich yet restrained black fruit, black olive, black pepper and violet aromatics, leading into a deep, smoky and silky palate with savoury complexity and excellent ageing potential.
Hand-harvested and partially destemmed, with native-yeast fermentation in open-top oak vats. Malolactic conversion in tank, followed by around 18 months of aging in French oak barrels before bottling.
