G.D. Vajra is one of Barolo's most quietly admired producers, run by the Vaira family from their base in Vergne, the highest village in the appellation. Their style sits in a graceful middle ground between traditional and modern, emphasising aromatic transparency, fine tannic detail and a strong sense of site. Ravera, in Novello, is one of the great south-facing crus on the western side of Barolo.
The 2022 is aromatic and quietly absorbing. Tea, dried hibiscus, orange rind, sandalwood and pressed flowers lead the nose, with a transparent, ethereal feel rather than overt power. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully etched, the fruit lifted and pure, with a backbone of fine, chalky tannins that gives focus and lends serious cellar potential.
A traditional Barolo for traditional matches: braised beef cheek, agnolotti del plin, white truffle pasta or aged Castelmagno.
