G.D. Vajra is a family-owned estate based in Vergne, the highest village of the Barolo zone, where the Vaira family have farmed for generations. The estate is one of the most respected names in modern Barolo, working organically and producing perfumed, classically structured wines from a string of high-altitude crus.
Ravera is one of the great single vineyards of Novello, on the southwest edge of the Barolo zone, where calcareous-marl soils and cool air give wines of striking finesse alongside real depth. The Vaira family was an early champion of the cru, and their bottling is widely regarded as one of its benchmarks.
The 2017 is layered and complex, with wild berry, new leather, dried flowers, camphor and grilled herb on the nose, opening into a structured palate of ripe red cherry, blood orange, cedar, licorice and a fine streak of iron. Spontaneously fermented and aged for around two years in large Slavonian casks, the wine carries noble, supportive tannins and a long, savoury finish built for the cellar.
