G.D. Vajra is a family-run estate in Vergne, the highest village of the Barolo zone, where the Vaira family has farmed since the late nineteenth century. Run today by Aldo Vaira and his children Giuseppe, Francesca and Isidoro, it is one of the most respected names in modern Barolo, working organically and producing wines that combine perfume, structure and longevity.
Bricco delle Viole is the highest-altitude vineyard in the entire Comune di Barolo, with vines climbing to 480 metres on cool, west-facing slopes. The hill takes its name from the wild violets that flower in spring, and that floral signature carries straight through into the wine. The Vaira family have farmed this site since the 1880s and it remains the last parcel they harvest each year.
The 2017 is layered with violets, raspberry and rose lifted by hints of incense, marasca cherry, lavender and white truffle. The palate is ripe and inviting at this stage, framed by building tannic structure and notes of fresh red cherry, blood orange and clove. A classically perfumed, high-altitude Barolo built for long cellaring.
