Elio Grasso is one of the benchmark estates of Monforte d'Alba, farming a single natural amphitheatre of vineyards in the Langhe hills of Piedmont. The Gavarini Chiniera bottling comes from a high vineyard sitting around 450 metres, where sandy limestone soils and a cool elevation give a Barolo of clarity and vertical structure.
Made from Nebbiolo, the wine is matured for around thirty months in large, untoasted Slavonian oak casks, a traditional approach that lets the site speak clearly. Expect aromas of violet, red cherry, dried rose and a touch of spice, leading to a palate of focused red fruit, fine chalky tannins and a long, mineral finish.
This is a structured, age-worthy Barolo that will continue to evolve gracefully in the cellar. Serve with braised beef, game, mushroom risotto or aged hard cheeses.
