Weingut Dr. Loosen has been one of the leading names in the Mosel for decades. Under Ernst Loosen, the family estate has consistently set the benchmark for Riesling from the river's most celebrated single vineyards, working old, ungrafted vines with patient, low-intervention winemaking.
The Wehlener Sonnenuhr, the famous "sundial of Wehlen", is one of the most storied vineyards in Germany, a steep south-facing slope where almost no topsoil covers the vineyard's pure blue Mosel slate. Dr. Loosen's parcel here is planted on ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines reaching back well over a century, giving wines of unusual depth and concentration.
The Grosses Gewächs is the German classification for a dry Grand Cru, the top dry tier from a Grosse Lage site. The 2019 is delicate, multilayered and finely structured, with floral, crunchy slate aromatics underpinned by a faint salty thread. The finish is long, piquant and saline, the picture of dry Mosel Riesling at its most refined.
