Weingut Dönnhoff has been one of the leading names of the Nahe for decades, and under Cornelius Dönnhoff continues to produce some of Germany's most precise and ageworthy Rieslings. The estate works a string of top-flight sites along the Nahe river, with viticulture certified Fair'n Green and an unwavering focus on letting individual terroirs speak.
The Felsenberg, in Schlossböckelheim, is one of the most dramatic vineyard sites in Germany. Its weathered porphyry and melaphyr soils sit on a steep, sun-drenched volcanic hillside, where the vines work hard and produce Rieslings of remarkable mineral intensity. Grosses Gewächs is the German equivalent of a dry Grand Cru, the highest classification for a single-vineyard dry wine.
The 2019 is dense and crystalline, with grapefruit, sage, salty wet stone and smoky volcanic notes lifting from the glass. The palate is full-bodied and intense, with a saline, lingering finish that carries Dönnhoff's trademark vibrancy. Built to drink now or hold for a long, slow climb in the cellar.
