Clos des Angles lies on the lower part of the Volnay slope towards the Pommard side of the commune, and the wine reflects that position. It has a little more flesh and a slightly firmer frame than the crus higher up the hill, without giving up the fragrance that defines the village.
The fruit runs a shade darker here: black cherry and damson alongside raspberry, with violet, sweet spice and a savoury note of earth and dried herb. The palate is rounded and generous, tannins fine but firmer than the Volnay norm, and the finish carries a pleasing savoury grip.
Domaine Yvon Clerget has been rooted in Volnay since 1268, and Thibaud Clerget, the twenty eighth generation, has led the cellar since 2015 following spells with Henri Boillot, Domaine Drouhin in Oregon and Charles Van Canneyt at Hudelot-Noellat. It drinks well young and better still with a few years behind it. Try it with roast lamb, duck or beef.
