Aux Genavrières is a small premier cru climat of Morey-Saint-Denis, its vines sitting on the slope above the grand cru Clos de la Roche. Domaine Lignier-Michelot farms around 35 ares of this roughly one-hectare site, with vines of about 50 years of age.
Virgile Lignier has run the family domaine since 2000, after working alongside his father Maurice from 1988. He gave up herbicides for ploughing and uses green harvesting to restrain yields, and his cellar work is built on minimal intervention.
Genavrières is fermented with a high proportion of whole bunches and extracted gently with pump-overs rather than heavy punch-downs, then aged in barrel with a measured amount of new oak. The result is an elegant, expressive Pinot Noir showing red and black fruit, fine spice and a silky texture, with the structure to reward time in the cellar.
