Clos Prieur is one of the finest lieux-dits in Gevrey-Chambertin, a distinctive pocket of land lying directly below the Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru and surrounded by grand cru vineyards. The upper part of the climat is classified premier cru and the lower part village. Domaine Marc Roy's vines here are more than 70 years old, rooted in iron-rich clay over limestone.
Its position and old vines give this bottling more depth and structure than the domaine's other village wines, with concentrated Pinot Noir fruit, a firmer frame and a mineral, savoury persistence that rewards time in the cellar. The 2023 vintage brought freshness and energy to Gevrey, and Alexandrine Roy has said that strict selection of the grapes at harvest was the essence of the year.
Alexandrine, fourth generation of the family, made her first vintage at the domaine in 2003 and later broadened her experience with vintages in Australia and New Zealand. Working across a dozen or so small parcels totalling around four hectares, she limits yields through disbudding and green harvesting, picks by hand and ferments in stainless steel with foot pigeage before ageing the wine in French oak.
