Domaine François de Givry Auxey-Duresses Les Riames Monopole 2023 750ml
Les Riames is a remarkable little site. At just over half a hectare it is the smallest monopole in the Côte de Beaune, made up of two sloping plots above Auxey-Duresses facing south and south east on marl and limestone. The climat was abandoned after phylloxera in the 1930s and lay untouched for decades, which means the soil never saw a chemical fertiliser or pesticide.
François de Givry founded his domaine in 2009 by acquiring two parcels in Auxey-Duresses and bringing this forgotten ground back into production. The wines are made by Pierre Vincent, formerly head winemaker at Domaine Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet, whose reputation with Chardonnay needs little introduction.
The result is a white of unusual purity for the appellation. Citrus, white peach and green apple are framed by white flowers, a fine nutty note and a taut, chalky minerality, with an elegant, tightly drawn palate and a long, saline finish. Serve it with seafood, poultry or a soft cheese, and give it time in the cellar to open out.
