Racines is a Californian project led by Étienne de Montille of Domaine de Montille in Volnay, who went searching for a home for Burgundian-style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and settled on the cool, wind-swept Sta. Rita Hills in 2016. Alongside its own estate vineyard, Racines works with a handful of the appellation's most respected sites, and Bentrock is one of the most striking of them.
Bentrock sits at the western end of Santa Rosa Road, where Racines farms two north-facing parcels of Chardonnay. The upper block is exposed and windy, with very rocky soils, while the lower block is sheltered by the hilltop and carries more topsoil. The fruit is fermented with indigenous yeasts in a mix of puncheons, barrels and barriques with a modest portion of new oak, then spends around a year in barrel and a further six months or so on lees in tank before bottling.
The result is a pure and vibrant Chardonnay, opening with aromas of crushed rock, lemon confit, white flowers and a touch of mint. Citrus fruit is threaded with a fine mineral line and bright, saline accents, all carried by an elegant, finely tuned structure.
