Domaine Blain-Gagnard was formed in 1980 when Jean-Marc Blain married Claudine Gagnard, daughter of Jacques Gagnard of Domaine Gagnard-Delagrange. Based in Chassagne-Montrachet and now run with the involvement of their son Marc-Antonin, the family estate includes holdings in Le Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, alongside a series of premier crus in Chassagne and small plots in Volnay and Pommard.
This white Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru comes from Morgeot, the large premier cru at the southern end of the appellation towards Santenay. Most of the domaine's Chardonnay here sits above the old Abbaye de Morgeot on heavier, stone-free red clay soils, which tend to give whites of weight and generosity. The wine is fermented with native yeasts in barrel and aged for close to a year in Burgundian oak, around a third of it new.
In the glass, Morgeot from Blain-Gagnard shows ripe yellow apple, peach and lemon with hints of vanilla and toast, carried by a rich, textured palate and a long, mineral finish. 2018 was a hot, early vintage, with harvest starting at the end of August, and the wine is marked by concentrated ripe citrus and real length. It pairs well with shellfish, white fish in cream or butter sauces, and roast poultry.
