Château Rauzan-Ségla is a Second Growth of the 1855 Classification, its vineyard set around the village of Margaux on the classic fine gravel of the commune. The property was bought by Chanel in 1994 and immediately put through a thorough programme of renovation in both vineyard and cellar, which restored it to the front rank of the appellation.
Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend at around 60 to 65 per cent, with Merlot taking most of the remainder and small amounts of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The wine spends eighteen to twenty months in French oak barrels, typically half to sixty per cent of them new.
Rauzan-Ségla combines Margaux perfume with real depth. Violets and dark berry fruit lead into cedar, graphite, tobacco and fine spice, and the palate is firm and silky at once, with a long, elegant finish. It rewards a decade in the cellar and ages well beyond that.
