Château Léoville Barton is a Second Growth of the 1855 Classification in Saint-Julien, and has belonged to the Barton family since 1826, the longest unbroken family tenure of any estate in Bordeaux. The Bartons arrived from Ireland in 1722, and the wine is still made at neighbouring Château Langoa Barton, since Léoville Barton has vineyards but no château of its own.
The property farms around 48 hectares of gravel over clay in the east of the appellation, with an average vine age of about forty years. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend at close to 80 per cent, filled out with Merlot and a touch of Cabernet Franc, and the wine spends sixteen to eighteen months in French oak barrels, around 60 per cent of them new.
This is a classically built Saint-Julien: cassis and dark plum with cedar, tobacco leaf and a graphite edge, framed by firm, finely grained tannins. Reserved and tightly wound in youth, it unwinds slowly and is at its best after many years in the cellar.
