Château Duhart-Milon is the only Fourth Growth in Pauillac, its vineyard lying on the Milon plateau immediately west of Château Lafite Rothschild. Domaines Barons de Rothschild bought the property in 1962 and rebuilt it over the following decades, and the two estates are still farmed by the same team.
Around 76 hectares are planted on fine gravel and sand over limestone, about two thirds to Cabernet Sauvignon and one third to Merlot. The grand vin is matured for up to eighteen months in oak, roughly half of it new.
Duhart-Milon is a classical, firmly built Pauillac. Cassis and blackberry sit against cedar, graphite and gently smoky spice, with a tight tannic frame and a fresh, mineral finish. It is reserved in youth and comes into its own after ten years or so in the cellar.
