Clos du Marquis is a Saint-Julien in its own right, made by the team at Château Léoville Las Cases. Although it was long sold as the estate's second label, since 2007 it has been produced entirely from its own separate vineyard, a distinct property to the west of the Las Cases holdings.
That vineyard covers around 45 hectares of sandy clay gravel over a humic topsoil, a slightly different terroir from the great walled clos by the estuary. The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and the wine is matured in French oak barrels before bottling.
The style is classic Saint-Julien: blackcurrant and dark cherry with cedar, tobacco and fine spice, structured but never austere, with good depth and a long, savoury finish. It is approachable after a few years and continues to develop well in the cellar.
