Château Léoville Poyferré is a Second Growth of the 1855 Classification in Saint-Julien, one of three estates carved out of the original Léoville property. It has been owned by the Cuvelier family since 1920, and its modern reputation was built under Didier Cuvelier, who took charge in 1979 and oversaw a long programme of replanting that roughly doubled the vineyard.
The property now farms around 80 hectares of Saint-Julien gravel. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend, with Merlot playing a generous supporting role and smaller amounts of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc adding spice and lift. The wine is matured in French oak barrels with a high proportion of new wood.
Poyferré is the most opulent of the Léoville estates. Ripe cassis and dark plum come with violets, mocha, cedar and sweet spice, and the texture is velvety, with tannins that are firm but rounded. It is generous enough to enjoy relatively young and has the balance to age for decades.
