The Brezza family has tended vineyards in the village of Barolo since 1885, and began bottling their own wine around 1910. Today the certified organic estate is still family run, farming native Piedmontese varieties with hand harvesting, minimal intervention in the cellar and a firm preference for large, untoasted Slavonian oak casks that let the vineyard speak rather than the wood.
Sarmassa is one of the family's historic crus within the commune of Barolo, a west and south-west facing slope at around 300 metres with clay and silt rich soils of the Sant'Agata Fossili marls. Planted with the Lampia and Michet clones of Nebbiolo, including vines dating back to 1941, the site holds water well and tends to shine in drier seasons. Its naturally softer tannins allow the family to extend maceration, building depth without hardness.
Expect aromas of dried cherry, dried roses, liquorice and dark spice, with hints of tobacco, menthol and eucalyptus. The palate is medium to full bodied, with cherry and blood orange flavours framed by firm, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Elegant but structured, it will reward patient cellaring.
Serve with game, roast or braised red meats, beef tartare or herb-crusted lamb.
