Weingut Wittmann is one of Rheinhessen's leading estates, based in the village of Westhofen where the family has grown vines for generations and farms entirely biodynamically. Morstein is their most celebrated site, a south-facing limestone slope classified as a VDP Grosse Lage and recognised as one of the region's finest vineyards.
Grosses Gewachs is Germany's designation for a dry wine from a top single vineyard, and this bottling shows why Morstein is so prized. It is a taut, mineral-driven Riesling with aromas of citrus, orchard fruit and white flowers, underpinned by a chalky, saline character drawn from the limestone soils. The palate is precise and structured, with piercing acidity and a long, stony finish.
Concentrated and built for the long haul, it can be enjoyed now with careful decanting but will reward extended cellaring.
