Lily is the pinot noir from Wantirna Estate, the Egan family's single vineyard in the Yarra Valley, established by Reg Egan in 1963. Named after one of the family's granddaughters, it is grown on the estate's small cool climate vineyard on the edge of Melbourne, from vines that include original plantings and blocks dating to the early 1980s.
The 2023 to 2024 season was neither too hot nor too mild, and the resulting wine pairs delicious fruitiness with textural density and power. In past vintages Lily has shown rich yet elegant character, juicy fruit, a savoury backbone and long length, with oak sitting in the background.
The grapes are hand harvested, destemmed and fermented in small open fermenters, with some batches given extra skin contact before pressing and maturation in barrel. The family says the wine will continue to age beautifully.
