Hannah is the smallest and most exclusive release from Wantirna Estate, the Egan family's pioneering single vineyard in the Yarra Valley, first planted by Reg Egan in 1963. Like each of the estate's wines, it carries the name of one of the family's granddaughters, with a label illustrated by the artist Michael Leunig.
Inspired by the merlot and cabernet franc based wines of Saint-Émilion, Hannah is made from just a single barrel each year. In 2024 cabernet franc takes a slightly larger share of the blend than merlot, giving a beautifully fragrant wine on both the nose and the palate. The perfume of cabernet franc leads, while merlot adds a juicy core of fruit, softness and weight, carried by ripe tannins.
The fruit comes from mature vines, many of them original plantings, grown on the estate's small cool climate vineyard on the edge of Melbourne. Since 2008 Hannah has been bottled a little earlier than the cabernet sauvignon led Amelia, and the family suggests giving this release a couple of years in bottle.
