Domaine de Chevalier sits in a clearing in the pine forest at Léognan, a Cru Classé de Graves for both colours, farmed by the Bernard family since 1983. The surrounding woodland keeps the site cool and prolongs ripening, which is central to the estate's restrained house style.
The red is planted to roughly 63 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon and 30 per cent Merlot with small amounts of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc on the gravelly soils of the appellation. It is matured for about eighteen months in French oak barrels, with around a third of them new.
The wine is elegant and finely drawn rather than powerful. Blackcurrant and dark cherry come with cedar, tobacco, graphite and the smoky, forest floor note typical of Pessac-Léognan, and the tannins are fine and firm. It is a classic wine for the cellar, unfolding over fifteen to twenty years.
