Château d'Armailhac sits on the Pauillac plateau immediately north of Mouton Rothschild and has belonged to the Rothschild family since Baron Philippe bought the property in 1933. It was classified a Fifth Growth in 1855 under the older name of Mouton d'Armailhacq, and took its present form in 1989.
The vineyard covers around 76 hectares of Pauillac gravel, planted to roughly 55 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon and 35 per cent Merlot, with an unusually high share of Cabernet Franc and a little Petit Verdot. Much of the vinification is done in stainless steel, and the wine spends about sixteen months in French oak, roughly a third of it new.
The result is a supple, generous take on the commune. Cassis and dark plum sit alongside cedar, graphite and gentle spice, with fine grained tannins and a savoury finish. It drinks well earlier than many classed growths of Pauillac while keeping the structure to reward the cellar.
