Vincent Girardin's Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes draws on Chardonnay vines averaging around 45 years of age, spread across the four communes of the appellation: Fuissé, Solutré, Vergisson and Pouilly. The vines grow on clay-limestone soils in the shadow of the famous limestone rocks of Solutré and Vergisson, formed from ancient coral deposits, in the southern Mâconnais.
The grapes are hand-picked with sorting in the vineyard, pressed gently and lightly settled before going to 500 litre French oak barrels, only around 10% of them new. Both fermentations run on indigenous yeasts and bacteria, and the wine rests on its fine lees for about ten months without any lees stirring, so the fruit and the stony character of the site stay in focus.
Expect aromas of lemon and stone fruit, followed by a rich, balanced palate and a long finish carrying floral and mineral notes. Serve lightly chilled alongside scallops and shellfish, grilled fish or fish in a cream sauce, charcuterie, white meats or cheese.
Vincent Girardin founded his house in 1980, aged just 19, with two hectares inherited from a family that had grown vines in Santenay since the 17th century. Now based in Meursault and guided by long-serving winemaker Eric Germain, the house continues its focus on letting each terroir speak for itself.
