Tenuta delle Terre Nere, the Etna estate established by Marc de Grazia, classifies its single-contrada wines in a hierarchy inspired by Burgundy. San Lorenzo is one of its Grand Cru sites, an eight hectare amphitheatre of vines in the commune of Randazzo that marks the north-western edge of the Etna DOC.
Nerello Mascalese vines ranging from 50 to 100 years old grow here at roughly 700 to 850 metres, rooted in almost pure volcanic ash scattered with black pumice. The wine combines vigour and generosity in a sumptuous, finely strung tension, offering perfumed red fruits, spice and a savoury mineral edge, carried by fine tannins and lively acidity. It is a thoroughbred expression of the north slope that rewards patient cellaring.
Pair with roast game, beef braised in red wine or a rich wild mushroom risotto.
