Calderara Sottana is the home vineyard of Tenuta delle Terre Nere, the Etna estate founded by Marc de Grazia, and one of its Grand Cru sites. Located in the commune of Randazzo on the north side of the volcano, it is planted on ancient lava flows and volcanic deposits that are very stony, with pumice, basalt and relatively little ash.
The Nerello Mascalese vines here are 60 to 100 years old and sit at around 600 to 700 metres. The resulting Etna Rosso is distinctly autumnal and spicy, both aromatic and austere, with notes of red cherry, dried herbs, earth and smoky minerals. The palate is full yet remarkably light on its feet, with a creamy texture and firm, fine structure that will develop beautifully in the cellar.
Serve with roast lamb, rabbit cooked in white wine, pork loin or a white meat ragù.
