Roagna is one of Piedmont's most revered traditionalist estates, with holdings in both Barbaresco and Barolo. Their Langhe Rosso is the house's entry point, a pure Nebbiolo made from the estate's younger vines in its great crus, including Pira in Barolo and Pajè in Barbaresco. Some of these parcels were replanted after mudslide damage in the 1990s, and as the vines are not yet old enough for the family's single-vineyard bottlings, their fruit is declassified into this wine.
Because it blends Nebbiolo from both Barolo and Barbaresco, it is labelled simply as Langhe, but it is made with exactly the same care as the top wines. Fermentation uses indigenous yeasts, followed by gentle extraction through long macerations of around two months, and the wine is then aged for an extended period in large neutral oak and concrete before release.
The result is a Nebbiolo of genuine class and character, offering red cherry, raspberry, rose petal and dried herbs with earthy, savoury undertones. Fine but noticeable tannins and bright acidity give it shape and freshness, making it a superb introduction to the Roagna style and a wine that will happily develop further in bottle.
