This is Pira Luigi's commune wine, drawn from their holdings across Serralunga d'Alba rather than from a single named cru. It is the clearest window into what makes this village the benchmark for structured, long lived Barolo.
Serralunga sits on some of the poorest, most calcareous soils in the zone, and the wines it produces are firm, savoury and built to age. Expect dark cherry and dried rose on the nose, with liquorice, leather, dried herbs and a mineral edge underneath. The palate is taut and linear, with genuine tannic grip and a long, faintly bitter finish in the best Nebbiolo tradition.
The estate was founded in the early 1950s and farms twelve hectares of Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera in the commune, moving from selling fruit and bulk wine to bottling under its own name. Give this a decant and pair it with braised beef, game, or a plate of Piedmontese cheeses.
