Les Narvaux lies high on the slope above the great premier crus of Meursault, on thin soils over fractured limestone. The extra altitude means cooler air and a later ripening, and the wine that results is one of the most tightly wound expressions of the village, closer in spirit to Puligny than to the buttery Meursault of popular imagination.
The nose is precise and cool, with lemon peel, white flowers and a clear note of crushed stone, filling out with a little air to show pear and toasted almond. The palate is linear and finely grained, with a chalky texture, a saline edge and a long finish that stays taut rather than broadening out.
Pierre-Vincent Girardin is the thirteenth generation of his family to make wine in Burgundy and the son of Vincent Girardin. When his father sold the family négociant business in 2011 he held back 4.5 hectares of the best sites to pass on, and Pierre set up his own estate in Meursault in 2016, releasing his first wine at nineteen. Fermentation is natural and ageing takes place in his signature large format 456 litre barrels, which give texture without obvious oak.
