Chassagne-Montrachet is the southern anchor of the Côte de Beaune's white wine heartland, and its village wines have a distinct character: firmer and more citrus-driven than Meursault, a touch broader than Puligny, with the limestone always close to the surface. This bottling draws on village parcels to give a clear, unembellished picture of the commune.
Grapefruit, lemon pith and white flowers lead the nose, with light hazelnut and a whiff of gunflint behind. The palate is precise and nicely weighted, with crisp orchard fruit, a chalky grip through the middle and bright acidity carrying a dry, mineral finish.
Pierre Girardin established his domaine in Meursault in 2016. His father Vincent Girardin sold the family business in 2011 but kept 4.5 hectares of the best sites to hand on, and Pierre has built from there, fermenting with indigenous yeasts, ageing in large 456 litre barrels and steadily converting the vineyards to organic farming.
