This cuvée brings together two ends of the Chavigne site: young vines planted in 2003 on a poor, rocky patch known as Juliette, which yields very little, and a parcel of very old vines alongside them. The combination is deliberate, pairing the tension and low yields of the stony ground with the depth that only age in the vineyard provides.
The result is a wine of extreme concentration and high acidity, with lemon peel, greengage and white flowers on the nose over almond and a hard mineral core. The palate is intensely pure and tightly drawn, with a chalky, almost crystalline texture and a finish that seems to go on far longer than the modest appellation on the label would suggest.
Jean-Marie Guffens and Maine Heynen have farmed at Pierreclos, in the heart of the Mâconnais, since the late 1970s. The domaine runs to about 5.5 hectares of Chardonnay on limestone slopes, and it has done more than any other single estate to change how the region is regarded.
