Taillepieds is one of the great premiers crus of Volnay, a fairly steep site in the south of the commune where pale, extremely stony and lean soils keep yields naturally low. Domaine Marquis d'Angerville farms around a hectare here, part of which has been replanted in recent years, and the wine is consistently the most chiselled and mineral expression in the domaine's Volnay line-up.
The 2022 shows that character clearly. Flint and crushed limestone lead the nose, followed by dark forest berries, blackberry, cherry and plum with a lift of rose petal. On the palate it is the most vertical wine of the range in this vintage, driven by fresh acidity, with complex red fruit, real depth and fine, supple tannins carrying a broad finish. Picking began unusually early, on 23 August, yet the warmth of the season is barely felt in the wine.
The d'Angerville family has held land in Volnay since 1804, and Sem d'Angerville was among the first Burgundians to bottle his own wine in the 1920s and 1930s, a stand against the fraud of the era. Today Guillaume d'Angerville leads the domaine, which began converting to biodynamics in 2006 and gained certification in 2009, while keeping his father Jacques' gentle, non-interventionist approach in the cellar.
