Champans is Domaine Marquis d'Angerville's largest premier cru holding, at almost four hectares, with vines averaging 40 to 45 years of age. It sits in the heart of Volnay's premier cru slope and typically delivers a wine of greater density and breadth than the domaine's more slender sites.
The 2022 has a lovely depth of plum and blackberry fruit, layered with spice and earthy notes. It is narrow and deep at first, opening into a plump, velvety palate with a saline edge and supple tannins that give support without any hardness. The vintage was early, with picking from 23 August, but the wine carries the freshness and balance of a classic year.
In the cellar the approach is deliberately restrained: grapes are destemmed and cold soaked, fermented with native yeasts and aged mostly in used barrels. The vineyards have been farmed biodynamically since 2006, a priority for Guillaume d'Angerville when he took over from his father Jacques in 2003, and Margot d'Angerville joined the family domaine in 2023.
