The Clos des Ducs is the flagship of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville and one of the most celebrated monopoles in Burgundy. This walled vineyard of 2.15 hectares lies directly beside the family's manor house in Volnay, on a steep, south-facing slope with stony, free-draining soils. It covers exactly the same area today as it did when the family's forebears acquired it in 1804, and its name recalls the Dukes of Burgundy, who once held the estate.
The 2022 is a wine of airy breadth and purity. Fine red and dark cherry fruit is woven through a seamless, harmonious palate, with a very fine, velvety tannin texture and a long, poised finish. Despite an early harvest that began on 23 August, the vintage shows classic Volnay elegance rather than heat.
The clos passed to the du Mesnil family in 1804 and later to Sem, Marquis d'Angerville, who replanted after phylloxera and pioneered estate bottling in the 1920s and 1930s. His grandson Guillaume has run the domaine since 2003 and converted it to biodynamics, with certification in 2009. Fruit is destemmed, fermented with native yeasts and raised largely in seasoned barrels to let the site speak.
